Project Description

The little Blue cottage that sanctuary visitors see upon entering the grounds was initially created as an office space. It was placed where we could see visitors arrive, keep our eye on the surrounding play yards and chat with volunteers heading out for a walk with their dog. It was perfectly situated to offer a quiet workspace, while still being close and accessible. It turns out, that was exactly the space a dog named Loki needed when he came to us. Loki was a dog who struggled with severe “stranger danger” and personal boundaries. He had been to trainers (in fact he lived with first one trainer then another) but he still did not succeed in his adoptive homes. In the end, Loki is who he is and he is a dog who needs space and respect. He is the first dog to teach us just how much good we could do for a dog by managing their environment. Giving Loki a home that was not isolated but that gave him the space he needed from strangers helped Loki let his guard down and learn to build friendships with our staff and volunteers. Loki is a lifetime resident. His boundaries are real and in his life before the sanctuary he used his teeth to enforce them. Here, Loki is safe, happy and able to live the life that feels good to him.
